Mixed waste

YES: All waste that you cannot or do not want to sort

Mixed waste is usually burned in a waste power plant to produce heat and electricity.

Biowaste

YES: food waste, food that has gone bad, fruit and vegetable peels, kitchen paper, coffee grounds and tea bags

NO: chemicals, glass, metals, cat litter, soil, garden waste, home plants or flowers, pet litter or any waste from pet cages

Biowaste is processed into compost. Some municipalities extract biogas from biowaste, which is then converted into electricity and heat.

Paper

YES: newspapers, advertisements and envelopes, etc.

NO: wet or very dirty paper, paper bags, cardboard packagings, gift-wrapping paper

Recycled paper is used to make newspapers or toilet paper.

Carton

YES: milk cartons, cardboard, paper bags, carton packages,  for example pizza boxes

NO: wet or very dirty paper

Recycled carton is used to make kitchen paper and toilet paper rolls.

NO: electrical devices or batteries

Different metals are machine sorted and used as material for new products.

Glass

YES: glass containers for food (bottles and jars)

NO: glass objects, glassware, mirrors ceramics, crystal, window glass, lamp

Recycled glass is used to make new glass containers.

Batteries

You can return household and mobile phone batteries to red collection containers found in stores.

The metal from batteries is recycled and all hazardous materials are processed safely.

Take small devices and toys back to stores that sell electrical equipment and electronics. Take big devices and toys to electronic waste collection points, click here www.kierrätys.info, for the location of electronic waste collection points in Hämeenlinna.

The metals from electrical equipment are recycled and used to make new equipment, for example.

Hazardous waste

Fluorescent lamps, energy-saving light bulbs, chemicals whose packages have a warning symbol. Dispose of them at a hazardous waste collection point, see the kierratys.info website.

Large amounts of waste
