Voting in advance and at-home voting

If you have the right to vote, a voting rights notice will be sent to you before the elections. Voting rights notices will be sent by post or electronically via Suomi.fi service. For more information about the service, please see suomi.fi/messages.
Instead of voting on election day, you can vote in advance at any general advance polling station in Finland or abroad. The advance voting period in Finland is from April 2nd to April 8th. The advance voting period abroad is from April 2nd to April 5th.
With your voting rights notice, you will receive a list of advance polling stations in your area. You can also find advance polling stations online at Ministry of Justice’s website. You can easily find a list of advance polling stations in Hämeenlinna on the Hämeenlinna city website (in Finnish).
You must have an identity card issued by the police; a passport, a driving licence or another official photo ID with you when you go to the polling station.
How to vote in advance
- Show your ID to the election official. The official will give you two ballots, a purple one and a white one.
- Take the ballots and go to a voting booth. There will be a pen in the booth and two lists of candidates. You can check the number of your candidates on these lists. The list for county elections is purple. The list for municipal elections is white.
- Use the pen to write the number of the candidate you want to vote for in the county elections on the purple ballot. Write the number of the candidate you want to vote for in the municipal elections on the white ballot. Do not write anything else on the ballot.
- Fold the ballots in half so that no one can see the candidate’s number.
- Return to the election official. They will stamp both ballots and give you two brown envelopes.
- Put the stamped ballots in their own envelopes and seal the envelopes.
- The election official will ask you to sign two forms. By signing, you confirm that you filled in the ballots yourself, got them stamped, and sealed them in the envelopes.
- Finally, the election official will put the brown envelopes into yellow delivery envelopes. The election official will put the county election envelope in its own delivery envelope and the municipal election envelope in its own delivery envelope. The election official will send both yellow delivery envelopes to the central election committee of your home municipality.
At-home voting
You can vote in advance at home if it is unreasonably difficult for you to vote at a polling station, for example, due to illness.
Register for home voting with the central municipal election board of your municipality in writing or by phone by Tuesday April 1, 2025 at 4 PM. Contact details are in the voting notification. You can ask the central municipal election board for more information about home voting.
