Help in emergency and crisis situations
Call the Emergency Response Centre’s emergency number 112 when you or someone else has an emergency where your or another person’s life, health or property, or the environment, is threatened or in danger. The Emergency Response Centre is open 24 hours a day. Alarms received through the emergency number are transmitted to ambulances, the police, the rescue department and On-call Social Services.
Call the emergency number, for example, in the following situations:
- your or somebody else’s life is in danger
- you or somebody else has been in a car accident or has witnessed a car accident
- you notice that a fire has started
- you notice that there has been a break-in somewhere
Please do not call the emergency number for non-urgent matters.
Do not call the emergency number, for example, in the following situations:
- for an ordinary case of illness
- for an incident where nobody is in danger, such as a power failure or traffic jam
- you want to ask the police about matters concerning permits, for example
An unnecessary call may lead to a delay in help arriving in a real emergency. Misuse of the emergency number can lead to criminal prosecution.
When you call the emergency number 112
When you call the emergency number, you can speak either Finnish or Swedish. You can ask if the operator understands English, but this is not guaranteed. If necessary, the operator will get help from interpreter services.
When you call the emergency number 112:
- give your name
- describe what has happened
- give the municipality and the address as accurately as possible
- answer the questions asked by the Emergency Response Centre operator
- follow the instructions given, i.e. do as advised by the operator
- do not hang up until you are told to do so
The emergency number can be called free of charge from any phone.
If you have installed the free-of-charge 112 Suomi mobile application on your phone, it may not be necessary to state your location, i.e. to know where you are. The Emergency Response Centre operator will see your location automatically when you make the call through the 112 Suomi mobile application. You can download the application from your phone’s app store.
The emergency department of the Kanta-Häme Central Hospital is intended for patients who need immediate, urgent care. The emergency department is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The address of the emergency department of Kanta-Häme Central Hospital is Ahvenistontie 20, Hämeenlinna. If necessary, you can ask for care instructions by phone, tel. +358 3 629 4500.
At the emergency department, all patients undergo an initial emergency assessment, and illnesses are treated in the order of emergency. If the ailment does not require urgent care, the patient will be directed to go home or to a health centre, or to see an occupational health care physician or private physician. Emergency department personnel do not renew prescriptions or write sick leave certificates.
The emergency clinic of Kanta-Häme Central Hospital examines and treats persons infected or injured, in the area covered by the hospital district, whose treatment must be started immediately.
However, in the case of an emergency, always call 112!
For example, a sudden onset of paralysis or acute, strong chest pain/shortness of breath requires immediate examination and care at the emergency department. Serious accidents, burns and fractures must be examined immediately. In the case, call emergency number 112!
If you need urgent dental care on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., you can book an appointment through centralised appointment booking between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.
If you need urgent dental care on weekdays between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. or at weekends, contact emergency dental care.
Emergency dental care only provides urgent care, i.e. if you or your close relative has a
- sudden severe ache that interferes with sleep and painkillers do not help
- bleeding that you cannot stop
- severe swelling with difficulty in breathing or swallowing, or a high fever
- Detachment of a tooth due to an accident or some other recent tooth injury accompanied by difficulty in breathing, swallowing, eating or opening the mouth.
Emergency dental care does not treat
- mild or moderate symptoms that have lasted for several days
- tooth fractures or the detachment of a filling or pivot crown
- the breaking of a prosthesis or orthodontic device.
If you have questions about preventing and/or treating acute poisoning, you can call the Poison Information Center. The Poison Information Center’s telephone service is open 24 hours a day.
Other experts
- If you suspect or know that you or your close relative has food poisoning, contact the health centre or emergency department.
- If you suspect or know that you or your close relative has developed an allergic reaction to a foodstuff or the sting or bite of an animal, for example, and the situation is urgent, contact the emergency department.
- If you want to ask about an allergic reaction caused by a foodstuff or by the sting or bite of an animal, for example, and the situation is non-urgent, contact the health centre.
- If you want to ask about pollen or other allergies, for example, contact the health centre.
- If you want to ask about medicines, contact the pharmacy.
- If you want to ask about foodstuffs (the ingredients of a foodstuff, for example), contact the food authorities.

Social services counselling and on-call social services
If your family has a crisis situation in which you need urgent help, contact the social services counselling of the City of Hämeenlinna. The counselling service is available on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. until 12 noon and on Wednesdays from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. in the number + 358 3 621 3303.
If you need urgent, necessary help when social services counselling is closed, call the On-call Social Services of Kanta-Häme. You can contact the On-call Social Services by calling the emergency number 112. The Emergency Response Centre will forward to On-call Social Services calls which, according to the Emergency Response Centre operator, require urgent measures by the Social Services Department.
On-call Social Services deals with the following situations:
- urgent child welfare issues
- situations concerning substance abuse and crime by minors
- family and close relationship violence
- emergency aid in crisis situations (death of a close relative, for example)
- situations where an elderly person cannot cope at home alone
- other situations that need urgent assessment and decisions by the Social Services Department and that cannot wait until the next working day.
On-call Social Services does not deal with the following situations:
- handling money, making bank transfers or paying bills. For social assistance, primarily contact Kela.
- child custody and right of access: if the right of access agreement or a court order is not followed, On-call Social Services has no jurisdiction to execute the right of access. The execution of the right of access can be applied for from the district court during office hours.
- cases that can wait until the next working day without risking anyone’s safety.

You can contact Lyömätön linja if you are a man and have subjected your dating partner, spouse, child or other close relative to mental or physical violence. Monika Multicultural Women’s Association
If you are an immigrant woman or child, you can contact the Monika Multicultural Women’s Association, which offers help, support and advice for immigrant women and children who have experienced violence.
Seek help if
- you have been threatened at home or elsewhere and you are afraid that your partner or another close relative will behave violently towards you
- you have been prevented from meeting your friends or relatives
- you have to ask permission to take care of matters outside the home (for example, going to a shop or seeing a doctor, studying, etc.)
- you fear that you will not be allowed to decide on your future spouse
- you have experienced sexual abuse or harassment

If you are a woman or girl who has experienced or worried about violence, or a close relative of such a person, you can contact the Women’s Line. You can call the Women’s Line for help, support and guidance.

Nollalinja
If you have experienced physical, psychological or sexual violence or threats of violence, you can contact Nollalinja. Nollalinja’s telephone service provides support and guidance.

Tukinainen
If you have experienced sexual violence and/or abuse, you can contact Rapecrises Center Tukinainen. The on-duty crisis personnel at Tukinainen provide crisis help and information on the services of Tukinainen crisis work. Tukinainen also has an on-duty legal service that provides information and guidance on sexual offences and financial legal assistance.
If you need a lawyer to help you with a legal matter, you may be eligible for free or partially reimbursed legal aid, for which the Finnish State will pay the lawyer’s fee either wholly or in part. You can obtain legal aid for all legal matters.
If you have problems with managing money, you can contact the financial and debt counselling at Kanta-Häme legal aid office for information and guidance on taking care of and planning your financial matters. If you have debts that you cannot manage, the financial and debt counselling service will investigate the alternatives available to you.
If you or your close relative has become a victim of crime witnessed a crime or crime attempt, you can contact Victim Support Finland. for help, support and guidance.

If you suspect that you are a victim of human trafficking, you are entitled to help and protection. You can receive assistance, for example, in matters related to safe housing and health services. You can also receive guidance advice and legal aid. If you are in Finland illegally, you may have the right to obtain a residence permit. Human trafficking is a crime in Finland.
Victims of human trafficking can be women, children or men. Human trafficking can be part of organised operations conducted by organised criminals, but the perpetrator can also be an acquaintance, friend or family member of the victim. Victims of human trafficking are commonly threatened, coerced and subjected to violence. The family, family members or close relatives of the victim of human trafficking may also be threatened.
The following acts are regarded as human trafficking:
- sexual or financial exploitation, for example, forcing someone into prostitution or work without pay
- forced marriage, in other words, a marriage that is not based on the free will of the spouses
- trade in human organs
- illegal adoption
- slave and forced labour

If you or your close relative is having problems with intoxicant abuse (such as alcohol or cannabis), gambling (for example, slot machines or the Internet) or some other addiction (for example, Internet use) or there are problems of this kind in your community (at work, for example), you can receive help and support. If you want to prevent addiction problems caused by intoxicant abuse, gambling or some other reason, you can receive help and support.
Assistance and support services are voluntary and confidential.
Hoitoa verkossa online service
If you need help in reducing or quitting your alcohol consumption, you can also receive treatment online. The Hoitoa verkossa programme combines your personal efforts with support from a professional over the Internet. The programme is suitable for people of adult age who can interact over the Internet. The programme is available throughout Finland, and it is also possible to work with it abroad.
If you close relative dies outside the care of a hospital, at home, for example, immediately notify the police or a doctor. The police will ensure that the cause of death is determined and convey information on it to the Population Register Centre. When a person dies in a hospital, the hospital conveys information on the death to the Population Register Centre, Social Insurance Institution of Finland (Kela) and to pension institutions.
When a person close to you dies, there are many things that must be taken care of. This checklist includes matters related to the death certificate, burial permit, burial place, burial, the termination of the person’s contracts, and safeguarding the incomes of the deceased person’s spouse and/or children
Telephone service for children and young people
You can call the telephone service for children and young people if you want to talk to an adult about something that worries or scares you. The calls are answered by adults who have time to listen to you. You don’t have to give your name when you call. The call is not recorded. The call is free of charge. The call is not shown on your phone bill either.
