From Sri Lanka to Hämeenlinna: Capturing Stories Through Visual Storytelling

My name is Prasath, and I am originally from Sri Lanka. Recently, I embarked on a significant life change, moving to Hämeenlinna with my wife and daughter to start a new chapter.

Relocating to Finland has been an exciting journey for us. Despite the distance from where I began, Hämeenlinna quickly felt like home. The welcoming atmosphere and the beautiful surroundings made settling in much easier than I expected. But when I arrived, I knew I wanted to do more than just live here—I wanted to contribute to the community.

Ihminen kuvaa kameralla ulkona toista ihmistä.

My Passion for Visual Storytelling

I have over 12 years of experience in photography, cinematography, and video editing. For me, these aren’t just technical skills; they are tools for connection. Visual storytelling has always been my passion. I love capturing moments that speak to people, whether it is a fleeting emotion or a grand event.

Working for the City of Hämeenlinna in the International Resident Services team has given me the perfect platform to combine my creativity with community impact. My role allows me to capture the diversity, culture, and beauty of our city, ensuring that the stories we share online are engaging and authentic.

Recent Projects: Bringing Stories to Life

One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is taking a project from concept to reality. Being able to both shoot and edit the content gives me the creative control to ensure the final video matches the emotion of the moment.

Recently, I had the opportunity to film and edit two videos that showcase the energy and opportunities here in Hämeenlinna.

  1. Valoilmiö 2025 Hämeenlinna Capturing the spectacular light art and atmosphere of the city’s beloved light festival. Watch here: https://youtu.be/st2p772Tlcs
  2. Independence Day in Hämeenlinna 2025 Highlights from the celebrations honoring Finland’s independence. Watch here: https://youtu.be/ws1bAm3ps7M

Creating these videos was a fantastic experience. It allowed me to apply my years of experience in cinematography and editing to highlight what makes this city special.

Looking Ahead

My experience so far has been fantastic. The team welcomed me warmly, and my instructor, Rami, always supports and encourages me in my work. Every assignment helps me learn more about Finnish working culture and the values that make Hämeenlinna unique.

I am looking forward to continuing this journey, bringing more stories to life through visuals, and connecting with the residents and visitors of this wonderful city
